3.How did Benedict of Nursia lay the foundation of Western Monasticism and what impact and role did the small numbers of Monks and Nuns have influence Western Civilization for centuries to come? Provide examples.

Benedict of Nursia laid down the foundations of western monasticism by having an emphasis on moderation and discipline. He would divide the days into “A series of activities, with primary emphasis on prayer and manual labor) (Spielvogel 158). He had physical work because He believed “idleness was the enemy of the soul” (Spielvogel 158). He had all the monks together for a majority of the day “A benedictine life was a communal one; monks are, worked, slept and worshiped together” (Spielvogel 158). Benedict also allowed the monasteries to have land so farming and other self sufficient work could be done. (Spielvogel 158). There was a rule of equality but poverty equality, there was a sense of community and equality so not only was it attractive to men, women followed and made their own sects of worship to become nuns (Spielvogel 158). Later in the history of monks and nuns, they played important roles within the church to spread the word of god around. The small groups of nuns and monks affected western civilization because of the dedication they had to devote themselves to something and they were spreading Christianity. The spread of Christianity to major parts of the roman empire, Britain, Ireland, Germany. (Spielvogel 159-160). Without monks and nuns the scope of Christianity may have been much, much smaller or at least have taken much longer to spread and become what it is today.

3.How did Benedict of Nursia lay the foundation of Western Monastisicsm and what impact and role did the small numbers of Monks and Nuns have influence Western Civilization for centuries to come? Provide examples.

Benedict of Nursia laid the foundation of Manastisicsm by writing rules that formed the fundamental rules of the monastic lifestyle. His rules made prayer and labor the two main parts of each day. It also made sure that everyone worked together as a common part of each day. “While this included private meditation and reading, all monks gathered together seven times during the day for common prayer and chanting of psalms” (Spielvogel 158). The monks and nuns became more common and they spread the word of Christianity wherever they went. One great example is, “Saint Hilda founded the monastery of Whitby in 657. As abbess, she was responsible for giving learning an important role in life of the monastery; five future bishops were educated under her tutelage” (Spielvogel 160). Having a female spreading the word of God and teaching others, had a great impact on many women. Once they entered the monastery, they were able to learn more than they would anywhere else since education was not a practice for women.
