Read the following scenario and identify the crime scene classification (organized or disorganized), determine victimology for the crime, identify the possible motivation for the crime, and then describe the offender based on probabilities, just a profiler would do. At a minimum, list what you believe are three probable characteristics of this offender. Explain why you selected these characteristics.

A 19 year-old black male is found dead in an alleyway. His body is within view of the street. The crime scene is south of downtown, in a high-crime urban neighborhood. No witnesses stated that they saw or heard the incident. The victim appears to have died from blunt-force trauma to the back of the head. He is carrying no identification on him, but his back left pocket contains the receipt of a purchase he made just minutes before the police officer found him. Among the trash in the dumpster nearby appeared to be a shovel with blood on it. A neighbor confirmed that the shovel was his and he usually leaves it in the alleyway because he likes to garden and his wife gets mad at him for leaving a dirty shovel in the house. The neighbor said he recognized the dead man as a “kid from the neighborhood” but does not know his name.

  1. Discuss a ‘profile’ of the criminal of the future as described by Goodman. Why do you believe this?
  2. Do you believe modern day law enforcement is properly equipped to deal with the “future”?
  3. How, as a criminal investigator, would you work to combat this type of criminal?
