Background: In Atlas Shrugged there is a motor that Dagny and Hank discover. The motor, they learn, was designed by its maker to convert static electricity, which is found in the atmosphere, into usable energy.

1. This motor and the static electricity are metaphors. What do you think is represented by the motor? And, what do you think is represented by the static electricity?
2. Recently we covered capitalist theory and communist theory in class.
   1. What would Adam Smith have to say about the motor? Specifically, where in his theory of capitalism would the motor fit?
   2. What would Karl Marx have to say about the motor? Specifically, where in his theory of communism would the motor fit?
