The thoughts that normally go through someone’s head when they are asked about what they think the police do are normally around the same ideas. Most people will picture the police as men and women in uniform that go around arresting the criminals. They believe that most of the time, the police have to wait for something to happen so that they can react and go and get the “bad guy”. Private security forces or private police on the other hand operate in a little bit of a different manner. They still roughly do the same type of job but they go about it in a different way. After conducting some research about private security companies, I was able to discover that there are so many out there that it would be hard to imagine where to begin. Out of the many private security companies that I have found, I would like to focus on three specific private security companies that really caught my attention. The three private security companies that I want to focus on are; AlliedBarton, KBR, and GK Sierra.

I didn’t randomly choose these private security companies to talk about. I chose them because I have had some interaction with them or have seen them in action at one time or another. First of all, AlliedBarton is who I am currently employed with. However they did change their name from AlliedBarton to Allied Universal Security Services. They are employed all over the country and currently have over 55,000 highly trained security professionals. AlliedBarton is the biggest U.S.-owned security officer business in America. The company focuses on various different areas, including higher education campuses, commercial property, aerospace and defense sites, housing, malls, healthcare facilities, and chemical industries (30 most powerful private security companies in the world, 2019). I also know that Allied is very veteran friendly. This was one of the reasons I was able to get a job here so quickly. Next, I would like to talk about KBR. KBR is a group that I had interactions with when I was deployed to Iraq both times. Currently, its American workforce in Iraq numbers 14,000, and it is also said to have the biggest U.S. government contract there – beating out all other Iraq-based companies (30 most powerful private security companies in the world, 2019). Lastly, I would like to talk about a company called GK Sierra. This is another military formed company that focuses mainly on the military communication side of things. I also have ties with this group in a way because I also studied communications when I was in the military.

Sometimes it would be easy to think that a small private security company doesn’t do anything that is wrong or frowned upon but that is not always the case. These companies have their fair share of problems just like the regular police departments do. A certain case that comes to mind when I think about some possibilities of things going wrong I think of, the story that we were told when we were training for our new job with allied universal. We were told a story of a security guard in Ybor City that shot at two men because they were urinating in a parking garage. The officer did not have a right to use that much excessive force and in the end he was punished for his crime. The security guard was arrested on charges of “aggravated assault with a firearm, battery, tampering with evidence and burglary” (Stephens, 2016). The security officer shot at the two men luckily missing them both and then proceeded to pick up the empty shell casings to hide the evidence.

I really think it’s great for us to have so many resources other than the regular police. It’s a big world out there and every little bit helps. We need these security companies just as much as we need the regular police officers. Some of these companies have been around for a long time now, and others are just getting started. I do think that it is very vital that each security team or group be brought up in the same way. Each group should have the same type of training that a normal police officer would go through. Sometimes, this should be even tougher training because sometimes these groups do so much more to help protect the community. Once again, I am all for the private security companies and them helping the community but only if they are all trained appropriately and are all punished the same way for their wrongdoings whenever they may occur.
