To Buy or Not to Buy?

Thomas from Michigan decided to replace the two front tires on his truck because winter was approaching and they were beginning to look worn. He suspected that the tires probably could hold out longer, but wanted to be on the safe side. When he went to shop for tires at a store that had been recommended to him by a good friend, the mechanic of the shop advised him to replace all four tires. Putting faith in the mechanics recommendation, Thomas spent more than he had planned and bought all four tires instead of just replacing the front two. Afterward, because he had spent so much money for the tires that he wasn’t even sure he needed, he experienced cognitive dissonance about the decision. Hoping to dispel his doubts, he compared prices of tires at other places and discussed his decision with his co-workers the next day that had experienced buying tires. The evidence that Thomas collected convinced him that he used good judgment in replacing his old tires, and he also believed that he had gotten a good bargain.

  • Recall an occasion when you experienced cognitive dissonance about a purchase. Describe the event, and explain what you did about it.
  • Did anyone such as a family member, friend, or colleague play a role in your cognitive dissonance about your purchase?
  • What did you learn from this experience overall and the factors and influences that play a part in you the consumer’s decision making process.

Hello Classmates!

Last month I had a one car accident. I totaled my front bumper. I was terrified to tell my husband because if I had been paying attention I would’ve saw the bumper. Immediately I call the dealer’s ship paint and body shop. When all I saw was the hanging fog light, when the appraisers saw it, it was much more to be fix than I had anticipated. The appraiser stated that it could not be fix and the bumper would have to be replaced. The total cost to be fixed will be $1119 leaving me to pay the $500 deductible. I immediately called my insurance company and they sent their appraisers to take a look and it was the same.

My husband was home when I received the check to pay for the damages. He said if I had discussed it with him first he could have fixed it for a cheaper price. I stared to have cognitive dissonance about about the purchase. I learned to include him in everything because he may know how to fix it without me spending unnessarymoney.

December 2018 I had to replace my front brakes on my pick up. I went to the place I have had done at before and he said I also needed to replace the back ones but I could wait a couple months but don’t wait too long and it would be fine if i did not replace the sensor about my brakes. I went home discussed what the back ones would cost with my wife and she agreed to wait on the back ones too. So we waited but every week we got paid my wife kept asking when I was going to replace the back brakes. So my cognitive dissonance came from my wife worrying about when I was going to rescheduled. I only dealt with it for a month before I had the back ones changed too. Part of the decision making process was the mechanic said I could wait a month or two, but I just got tired of my wife worrying about it so I adjusted the budget to make it happen. The reason I keep going back to this mechanic for brakes is that he does a good job and he gets it back to you the same day you take it to him.
